History

Rajapur has been an important centre in maritime trade for all times in the history of the subcontinent. The town has a creek which was navigable. In colonial times the English and French East India Companies had factories which were located near the creek. It is known that these factories were abandoned in the early 18th century and appear to be used later for offices (kacheris). Rajapur is mentioned in novel "Parashuramachi Savli" by famous author Late Raveendra Pinge.

In 17th century, the East India company had an ammunition fulfillment center in Rajapur. Henry Revington, the then chief of the port, assisted Siddi Jauhar with powerful cannons to besiege Shivaji in fort Panhalgad, despite the non-interference agreement between Shivaji and Revington. In March 1661, after escaping from Panhalgad, Shivaji reached Rajapur with his army; arrested Revington and other British officers, and confiscated handsome amount from the East India company. Remnants of the fulfillment canter can still be seen along banks of the river flowing through the heart of the city.
